Privacy policy
Rollum is an email app for the Mac. It is built so that your mail stays on your Mac. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.
Who we are
Rollum is made by Hao. For privacy questions, write to [email protected].
Your mail stays on your Mac
Rollum connects directly from your Mac to your mail provider, such as Google, Microsoft, Apple iCloud or your own mail server. Your messages, attachments, contacts and account details are downloaded to your Mac and stored there, encrypted. We do not run servers that receive, store or process your mail, and we cannot read it.
Your passwords and sign-in tokens are stored in the macOS Keychain on your Mac. They are never sent to us.
Data Rollum handles on your Mac
- Mail data: messages, attachments, folders and labels from the accounts you add, so you can read, search, sort and send mail.
- Contacts and calendars: only if you allow access in macOS, to recognise senders you know and to add events you choose. This data stays on your Mac.
- Things you create in the app: settings, templates, to-dos, snoozes and reminders.
Services the app connects to
- Your mail providers, to sync and send your mail and to sign you in.
- Your mail domain, to look up its server settings when you add an account.
- Apple: the App Store for purchases; your private iCloud storage to sync settings, to-dos and snoozes between your own Macs, if you use iCloud; translation and AI model downloads; and crash reports, only if you have chosen to share them with developers in macOS settings.
- A cloud AI provider, only if you turn on cloud AI for a feature. See below.
- Our credential service, only while cloud AI is on. It receives your App Store purchase record to check your subscription, and returns a short-lived key. It never receives mail, addresses or anything from your mailbox, and it keeps no logs of requests.
- Addresses you choose to open, such as images in a message you choose to load, or a newsletter's unsubscribe address when you click Unsubscribe.
The app lists these services in its settings.
AI features
AI features, such as sorting, summaries and suggestions, run on your Mac by default, using Apple's on-device model. Nothing leaves your Mac for them.
Some features can use a cloud AI provider instead. This is off by default, and you turn it on feature by feature. Before you do, the app shows which provider is used, what is sent, and the provider's terms. When it is on, only the parts of a message the feature needs are sent, directly from your Mac to the provider. We only use providers that have agreed to keep none of the data and not to use it for training. You can turn cloud AI off at any time.
AI never sends, deletes or moves mail on its own. Every such action needs you.
No tracking, no account
You do not create an account with us. The app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and we do not collect information about how you use it. We do not sell or share your data.
Google user data
When you add a Google account, Rollum asks Google for permission to read, send and organise your Gmail, and, if you choose, to answer calendar invitations. This data is used only to provide these email and calendar features to you in the app, and it is stored only on your Mac.
Rollum's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not use Google user data for advertising, we do not sell it, and no person at Rollum reads it. Google data is not sent to a cloud AI provider unless Google has approved this for Rollum and you turn it on.
You can remove Rollum's access at any time in your Google account settings.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data stays on your Mac until you delete it. Removing an account in Rollum deletes its mail and settings from your Mac. Deleting the app removes its data from your Mac. Mail on your provider's servers is not affected by removing it from Rollum.
Security
Connections to mail servers are always encrypted. Mail stored on your Mac is encrypted, and the encryption key is kept in the Keychain.
Your rights
Because your data is on your Mac and not with us, you control it directly. If you live in the EU or UK you have rights under the GDPR, including access, correction and deletion of personal data we hold. We hold none of your mail. For any question or request, write to [email protected]. You may also complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Rollum is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and tell you in the app when the change matters to you.
